SCENE:  The half-lit church in Costa Verde.  HOLLY and BLAKE sit together on a pew, waiting for ALAN-MICHAEL.  Suddenly, the church floods with light as ALAN-MICHAEL opens the doors behind them and comes in.  BLAKE and HOLLY turn and stare at him.  BLAKE gets up and he and she hug, kiss, and touch each other’s face and hands, forgetting where they are and that HOLLY is in the room with them.

BLAKE: Alan-Michael!

ALAN-MICHAEL:
It’s over!  Everything’s gonna be all right.

BLAKE: You’re safe, thank God! You’re safe!

ALAN-MICHAEL:
It was Roger!  It was Roger who helped me out!  Oh, baby . . . [kisses her]

BLAKE [seeing his wrists]: You’re hurt!

ALAN-MICHAEL: No, it’s okay!
 It’s okay!

BLAKE: Oh, my gosh!

ALAN-MICHAEL: No, it’s okay, it’s okay.
 Lemme just look at you!

BLAKE [through kisses]: Oh, it’s really over!
 You’re here!

ALAN-MICHAEL:
 That’s right.

BLAKE: I can’t believe it. I was so scared. Please, just hold me! Hold me!

ALAN-MICHAEL:  What did they tell you? No, what did they tell you? C’mon, tell me.

BLAKE: No. It doesn’t matter.

ALAN-MICHAEL:  You’re so beautiful. [BLAKE is weeping.] No, no, no! C’mon.  You’re supposed to be happy.

BLAKE [kissing his fingers]: I am so happy.
I never thought that I could love anyone so much.

ALAN-MICHAEL [kissing her]: Well, I guess I should go away more often.

BLAKE: Don’t joke.

ALAN-MICHAEL:
I just wanted to see that smile a little more often. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately.

BLAKE: I was out of my mind; I was so helpless, and Dad wouldn’t let me call the police.

ALAN-MICHAEL: Your father was great, the way he figured everything out.

BLAKE: No, but it was you, because we heard the church bells on the tape, and that was how Dad figured it out!

ALAN-MICHAEL:  I’m sorry, I’m sorry you had to go through all this.

BLAKE: Alan-Michael, don’t worry about me.

ALAN-MICHAEL:  I’ve been thinking a lot about you and, uh ...  [He puts his hands at her waist, thinking about the baby.  BLAKE loses her smile for a moment.] Are you all right?

BLAKE: I’m fine. Were you scared?

ALAN-MICHAEL:
At first I was terrified.  Then it got worse ...I missed you.

BLAKE: It must have been so horrible.

As ALAN-MICHAEL kisses BLAKE, she murmurs, “Mom’s here.”
HOLLY gets up from the pew and hugs ALAN-MICHAEL.

ALAN-MICHAEL [still a little breathless]:  Hi!

HOLLY: I can’t tell you how glad we are to see you!

ALAN-MICHAEL: Thanks!  It still hasn’t all soaked in just yet.  I’d like to get myself cleaned up. I must look terrible.

BLAKE [kissing him]: You look great!

HOLLY: You must be hungry.

BLAKE: Yes, I’ll take you back to the hotel.

HOLLY: Is there anything I can do?

BLAKE [with a beautiful smile]: No, I think I can manage!

HOLLY [smiling too]: Okay.

ALAN-MICHAEL [kisses HOLLY on the cheek]: Thanks.  Thanks for taking care of her.

As BLAKE leads ALAN-MICHAEL away, HOLLY softly adds, “I’ll wait for your father.”

She watches them walk out of view, and then turns and sits on the pew, smiling and musing.

HOLLY: Well, Roger, I gotta hand it to you.

She nods slightly.

LATER:  HOLLY sits alone on a pew, lost in thought and waiting for ROGER, who finally rushes into the church.

ROGER:  Alan-Michael get here all right?

HOLLY:  Blake took him back to the hotel.

ROGER:  Good.

ROGER and HOLLY sit together on a pew.  HOLLY looks as close to “radiant” as she ever has.

HOLLY:  You should have seen them!

ROGER [quietly pleased]:  I wish I had.

HOLLY:  After everything I’d said about the marriage, I felt so ...

ROGER:  Holly, don’t be too hard on yourself. But I’ll tell you what: Alan-Michael’s something else.

HOLLY:  Was it awful, where they’d kept him?

ROGER:  Well, it was bad enough.  They kept him blind-folded the whole time; that’s rough.  They tried to break him down, but he is one tough kid.

HOLLY:  It makes me sick to think of what they put him through.  Prison is too good for Gary Swanson.

ROGER [reflecting]:  You’re right.  What he’s getting is worse.

HOLLY:  What do you mean?

ROGER [not pleased to have to tell her]:  I had to let him go.

HOLLY:  You what?!

ROGER:  It’s complicated, Holly.

HOLLY:  Roger!  What did you do, make a deal with him?!

ROGER:  It’s not what I want.

HOLLY [sardonically]:  What, did he offer you a building?!

ROGER looks at her with rage for a split second, but then says:  He and Blake were lovers.

HOLLY:  She told me that.

ROGER:  Believe me, if there were any other way—

HOLLY:  This is kidnapping. You can’t just shrug this off!

ROGER:  Listen!  I’m not “shrugging it off!”

HOLLY:  Then I’m gonna go to the police.

ROGER:  No!  You were right about Blake.  She tricked Alan-Michael into the marriage, and Gary Swanson can prove it.

HOLLY:  I don’t think I want to hear this.

HOLLY gets up, but ROGER stops her.

ROGER:  Blake isn’t pregnant.

HOLLY looks at him for a second:  “Are you sure?”

ROGER:  She was just so desperate to hang onto Alan-Michael . . .

HOLLY is incredulous—and annoyed: their daughter is hare-brained.

HOLLY [exasperated]:  Oh, Blake!  [a pause]  Why does this mean you have to let Gary go?

ROGER:  Because Gary has a tape showing her rigging the pregnancy test. I had to let him go to save her marriage.
