SCENE: The opening of Monday’s episode recaps Friday’s ending, with HOLLY opening the sliding door and finding DAVIS, who promptly claps a hand over her mouth and says, “It’s not Roger, Holly!  And if you promise not to scream, I’ll take my hand away from your mouth.”

HOLLY nods, and DAVIS removes his hand.

HOLLY:  Davis, what are you doing here?!

DAVIS:  Don’t shout!

HOLLY:  Look, if you want Roger . . .

DAVIS:  I’m not looking for Roger. He’s outside in his car, sound asleep.

HOLLY:  What do you want with me?

DAVIS:  I’m taking you hostage ‘til Roger gives me what I want.

HOLLY: Look, this is an issue between you and Roger!  I’m going to go and get him and you two can work this out!

DAVIS pulls a gun on HOLLY.

DAVIS: No!  One thing I have always admired about Roger is that he is absolutely fearless and if we wake him too early he might try and call my bluff and I don’t think that would be a very good idea!

HOLLY: I don’t understand this!

DAVIS:  It’s simple.  Roger has something I want, and now I’ve got something he wants!

HOLLY:  This is what you came to Springfield for?

DAVIS:  Wouldn’t you, for ten million dollars?

HOLLY:  I don’t think Roger has that kind of money anymore.

DAVIS:  Well, he’d better have it if he doesn’t want to see you get hurt.

HOLLY:  I think you misunderstand what I mean to him.

DAVIS:  No, I don’t!  And if you do you’re not as smart a woman as I thought.  Roger would follow you to the end of the earth—it appears that he already has!  Yeah, yeah—I think he’ll hand over the money!

HOLLY:  So what do you want me to do?

DAVIS:  Just be smart, and cooperative. Help me, and you help yourself.

HOLLY:  How?

DAVIS:  We wait here until morning. Then when Roger knocks on the door, we both convince him to go to the bank and make a large withdrawal.

HOLLY:  So, you get your money, and then what?

DAVIS:  Then you drive me to the airport, and I leave for parts unknown.

HOLLY:  What if Roger isn’t here in the morning?  What if he takes off in the middle of the night?

DAVIS [mockingly, harshly]: What if? What if?  I fixed the car.  Roger’s not going anywhere.

HOLLY:  Okay, Davis, look, I know how frustrating Roger can be.  [She sits down beside DAVIS.]  But look, you know, if they catch you doing this, they’re gonna arrest you for kidnapping.  You want to go back to jail.  If you just leave, now, you know, it will be okay.  I will go and talk to him and I’ll try to [HOLLY gets up and turns around, but DAVIS points the gun at her again and cocks it.  She hears the click and stops short.]

DAVIS:  Thanks anyway.  But, appealing as you are, I think I’d do better at persuading him.  Besides, unfortunately, I lost my temper already today with Roger, earlier, and we made quite a spectacle of ourselves in public, so I’m sure the authorities are already looking for me.  Nice try.  So do yourself a favor and behave, because I have very little to lose. Roger, on the other hand, has everything to lose.

MICHELLE’S voice is heard from behind a closed door.

MICHELLE: Holly, I can’t sleep.

HOLLY freezes in fear.

DAVIS:  Oh, that’s right.  I’d almost forgotten the kid.

HOLLY speaks with a demeanor of forced calm during most of the scene.

HOLLY [to MICHELLE]:  It’s okay, sweetheart.  Just stay there.  I’m coming.

MICHELLE:  I think I left something in there.

DAVIS: She wants to come in here. Get rid of her.

HOLLY:  Just promise me you’re not gonna scare her.

DAVIS: Don’t you try anything.  I’m warning you.

HOLLY: Okay.

DAVIS hides in the shadows behind a large plant as HOLLY opens the door to MICHELLE.

MICHELLE:  I thought I heard voices.  Did Mr. Thorpe come back?

HOLLY:  No, he’s sleeping in the car.  Remember?

MICHELLE:  How come, though?

HOLLY:  We . . . we talked about that before, honey.  Why don’t you go to bed?  We’ll talk about it in the morning some more.

MICHELLE:  It’s my diary.

HOLLY:  It’s not lost.  I saw it somewhere around here.

MICHELLE:  But I’ve been writing stuff that we did, and things we said . . .

HOLLY:  I know.  I’m not gonna read it.  I promise.

MICHELLE:  But I forgot to write something I just remembered.

HOLLY:  You can. You can write it in the morning.

MICHELLE:  But I might forget it. I think I just left it [She moves towards where DAVIS is hiding].

HOLLY [Loses her calm]: No!

Before MICHELLE can react to HOLLY’S outburst, the phone rings.

HOLLY: Get that for me, honey.

MICHELLE:  Me?

HOLLY: Please.

MICHELLE [picking up the phone]:  Hello.

It’s ED.

ED: Michelle?  Well, now I know why you like to be with Holly so much.   Do you have any idea what time it is?

MICHELLE:  Dad, it’s not that late.

DAVIS and HOLLY look at each other.

ED: Lucky for you I’m not there.

MICHELLE:  I know.  You want me in bed before dark.

ED: C’mon, c’mon. I’m not that strict, especially on the Fourth of July.  Actually, I almost came down to surprise you two tonight, but I was working at the hospital until just a little while ago.

MICHELLE:  Oh, that’s okay.

ED:  So, you and Holly having fun?  What did you do tonight?

MICHELLE:  We had a great time. There’s something I have to tell you, but don’t get mad.

ED:  I’m not gonna get mad.  I miss you too much.

MICHELLE:  We had fireworks.  I mean, I didn’t light them, I just watched.

ED: Well, that’s cool.  I didn’t know Holly was bringing fireworks.

MICHELLE:  Oh, she didn’t.  Roger brought some with him.

ED:  Uh, Roger Thorpe was there?

MICHELLE:  Yeah, he said he was just on his way someplace, but now he’s sleeping in the car.

HOLLY watches MICHELLE, hoping that ED will understand that something is wrong.

ED:  Can I talk to Holly, hon?

MICHELLE [holding out the phone to HOLLY]:  He wants to talk to you.

HOLLY’S eyes meet those of DAVIS.  Then, she takes the phone.

HOLLY:  Hi, Ed.

ED: Hi, um, Michelle tells me that Roger showed up?

HOLLY:  Yes, it was quite a surprise.

ED:  I’ll tell you, I’m not really crazy about that arrangement, so maybe I’ll . . . uh . . come down in the morning.

HOLLY [“Innocuously”]: Oh, no.  That’s way too late!

ED:  What do you mean?  Is everything all right?

HOLLY:  Of course not.

ED:  What’s going on?

HOLLY:  Thanks for asking.  I’ll see you soon, then.

HOLLY hangs up the phone.  On the other end of the line, ED mutters . . .

ED:  Oh, damn it, Roger!  What the hell are you doing now?!

Actually, ROGER’S trying to go to sleep, but it’s still not happening.  The pillow gets tossed to the floor again.  He tries to start the engine, but it doesn’t work.

ROGER [to the car]: C’mon!  C’mon, c’mon!  [giving up] Oh, Holly, you are gonna get your wish and I am gonna freeze out here!

ROGER gets out of the car and heads towards CLIFF HOUSE.

HOLLY [handing MICHELLE her diary]:  Here it is.

MICHELLE:  I knew I left it down here.

HOLLY:  You were right.

MICHELLE:  Is everything okay?

HOLLY:  Yes, sweetie, everything’s fine. You go to bed.  Let’s get up early in the morning.

MICHELLE:  Okay.  Goodnight!

HOLLY:   Goodnight, sweetheart.

MICHELLE goes back upstairs, and DAVIS comes out of hiding.

DAVIS:  What did the kid’s father say on the phone?

HOLLY:  He wanted to know if she was all right. What do you think?  Let me call him back.  I can tell him to come pick her up in the morning.

DAVIS:  You think I’m crazy?

HOLLY:  I’d just say she tried to sound brave on the phone, but she’s homesick, and wants to go home.

DAVIS:  No!  The kid stays here!

HOLLY:  What’s going to happen to her in the morning?

DAVIS:  Nothing, if there are no problems. She’ll stay here.

HOLLY:  I won’t give you any problems if you promise me you’re not gonna hurt her.

There’s a knock at the door.

ROGER:  Holly, are you awake?

DAVIS gives HOLLY a significant look.

DAVIS waves HOLLY to the door and keeps the gun on her as she talks.

ROGER:  Holly, it’s freezing out here.

HOLLY [not opening the door or curtain]:  I fell asleep, Roger, reading.  Go away.

ROGER: Well, I’m really sorry that I woke you.  Could I possibly have a blanket?

HOLLY:  No, I can’t.

ROGER:  Well, ah, a bedspread?  A couple of beach towels?  Anything.  I mean, I tried to start the heater in the car, but something’s broke in there and nothing’s working.

HOLLY:  I’m sorry, I can’t.  Go away.

ROGER:  Holly, this is not some sort of teenage ploy to get you to open the door.  I’m really cold!

HOLLY [rising desperation]: I’m sorry, Roger. Go away!

ROGER:  Holly, c’mon!

HOLLY:  I’ll see you in the morning.

As ROGER retreats . . .

DAVIS: Very good!

DAVIS would be less enthusiastic if he could see what HOLLY’S doing with her hand.  She’s flashing the outdoor light switch: “SOS.”  The scene fades as ROGER sees the signal.

DAVIS:  Why don’t you make yourself comfortable?  We’ve got a long wait until morning.  [Chuckles] Roger didn’t like being dismissed, did he?

HOLLY:  Nobody does.

DAVIS:  And you sent him away like some lovesick puppy. Do you think he’ll be back?

HOLLY:  I doubt it.

DAVIS:  But you’re not sure.

HOLLY:  He won’t be back. [pause] What are you looking at?

DAVIS:  When I knocked on the door earlier, you thought it was Roger.  You were expecting him, weren’t you?

HOLLY:  No!

DAVIS:  Sure you were!  You were gonna invite him in.

HOLLY: There’s a child in the house.  I wouldn’t invite a man in here!

DAVIS:  You think a little girl would stop a man like him, a man that would throw away a fortune to chase after you?

HOLLY:  I don’t know what you’re talking about.

DAVIS:  He walked away from Jenna Bradshaw’s millions.  I’d say he’s got it pretty bad for you.

HOLLY:  I didn’t invite him here.

DAVIS:  Do you often go to the door when strangers knock in the middle of nowhere?

HOLLY: No!  I ...

DAVIS:  You know, I’d already have my money if it weren’t for you.  If Roger had married that Bradshaw woman, he’d have paid me back the day I showed up and I’d be long gone by now. It’s too bad for you; too bad for Roger.

HOLLY:  You’ve got it wrong, Davis.  Roger doesn’t care about me.  You if anybody should know that. Roger Thorpe only cares for himself.  He’s probably already asleep.

CUT to ROGER creeping along the roof of CLIFF HOUSE, unsuccessfully looking for a way in through an upstairs window. He is startled by the sound of a car pulling up.

DAVIS turns off the lights.

DAVIS:  Okay. Lights out.

DAVIS sits beside a nervous HOLLY, who has pulled the collar of her robe close to her.

DAVIS: So how does it feel?

HOLLY:  How does what feel?

DAVIS:  To be worth a billion dollars to a man?  Because that’s what Roger lost when he started hanging out with you.

HOLLY [irritated, although her voice is still low enough not to awaken MICHELLE]:  Roger does not “hang out” with me.  I don’t want him here any more than I want you here, so why don’t you just take him and leave!

DAVIS:  You’ve got a lot of spirit, Holly.  I guess he likes that.  What else does he like about you?

HOLLY turns her head in disgust, but DAVIS uses the gun to turn her face to him.

DAVIS: Don’t turn away from me. I want to look at you.  What do you think?  What else does he see in you?

HOLLY [In a small voice]:  I don’t know.

DAVIS:  Maybe we ought to find out.

CUT to ED looking at ROGER’S empty car.

ED: You just can’t leave her alone, can you, Roger?

ED heads towards CLIFF HOUSE, but ROGER springs upon him and throws him back against the car.

ROGER: Don’t make a sound!
