After ROGER has a phone conversation with the kidnapper, BLAKE's anxieties get the best of her. She lashes out at both her parents, and even questions how sincere they are about wanting to help ALAN-MICHAEL.
HOLLY [sitting beside of BLAKE on the
bed]: Darling, your father and I know how scared you are. And we know that
you don't mean what you've been saying. Don't
you know that we would do anything for you? This man would move a mountain
for you.
ROGER: Honey. I know. I know. It's gonna be okay, I'm telling ya. It's all gonna be okay.
NEXT SCENE: BLAKE [sitting on the bed]: How can you? ROGER: Because . . . because we are in control. We have the money; they want the money. HOLLY comes into the room with a wet cloth, which she places against BLAKE’S forehead for a moment, saying, “Here, honey. This’ll make you feel better.” ROGER: Okay, look. I want you to relax, honey. Please, just lie back, and completely relax, okay? Good girl, good girl. [ROGER massages her temples, and kisses her forehead].
BLAKE: Thanks, Daddy. And thank you, too, Mom. Thanks for coming with Dad. [To ROGER] Please just make sure that Alan-Michael doesn’t get hurt. ROGER: I’m not going to let anything happen to Alan-Michael. I promise. That’s it. We’re here. As BLAKE falls asleep, ROGER kisses her forehead once more, and then looks up at HOLLY. ROGER: Well, I think you’d better get some rest yourself. I’ll be next door if the phone rings, or if you need me. ROGER steps into the next room. HOLLY watches him as he goes, and decides to follow him.
HOLLY: Mind if I join you? I couldn’t really sleep. I’d just lie there waiting for the phone to ring. ROGER: We’ll change rooms tomorrow so I can be near the phone. HOLLY: Blake really loves him. She ... she really seems to love Alan-Michael. Why did I just assume? ROGER: Things are not always what we assume them to be. HOLLY: I suppose I ought to know that by now. ROGER: Well, at times we all are ... too quick to judge. HOLLY:
Yes, that’s true.
HOLLY [oddly vulnerable]: Yes. Ross and I are engaged. [ROSS and HOLLY just became engaged at the Bauer's Fourth of July Barbeque]. ROGER [looking a little away at first]: Congratulations. Won’t he be upset, your coming down here? HOLLY: He knows I’m coming for Blake. He understands that. [Actually, ROSS knows nothing about it at all!]. ROGER: Ross is a good man. HOLLY: Yes, he is. Alexandra must be very proud of you for doing this.
ROGER [looks sharply at her, surprised; but then says]: Right now Alexandra’s having a hard time getting past our business reversals. HOLLY: Oh, but she will. ROGER [vulnerable himself now]: I tell you the truth. I don’t know what I could do right now to get back into her good graces. [ROGER sits at a table across from HOLLY.] She used to admire me for my ambition, for my drive, for my willingness to take risks. In fact, she used to say that’s why she fell in love with me. HOLLY:
And now? ROGER just barely nods, and looks down. HOLLY shifts uncomfortably in her chair. HOLLY: You told that crackpot to call back in twenty minutes. It must be past that by now. ROGER: They want us to sweat a little. It’s all part of the game. HOLLY: Are you sure Alan-Michael is still alive? ROGER: Sure? You want me to say I’m sure? HOLLY: If he isn’t, it’s going to destroy Blake.
A few minutes later, the kidnapper calls back with the information that ROGER requested to prove ALAN-MICHAEL was still alive. The kidnapper tells ROGER something that only BLAKE and ALAN-MICHAEL knew that they did before they left for their honeymoon: She pierced his ear, right?
ROGER turns to BLAKE and tugs
on his ear.
