December 5, 1983

David arrives home and appears completely forlorn ... tired, angry, frustrated ...alone.  He finds a note that Simon has left: "Thanks for your help. Hope I didn't cause you any trouble.  Perhaps we'll meet again someday. Simon."

He sits down at his desk, and runs his hand through his hair, exhausted.

Next scene:  David has answered the phone.

David:  I said I had no comment.  I just told you that I cannot comment ...

He slams the phone down, and off the hook ...

Just then, there's a knock at the door ...

DAVID:  Ah! (He slams his fist on the desk, and screams…) Who is it?!!

JENNY (we hear a very quiet) :  Jenny.

DAVID (jumping up from his desk):  Jenny?!  (opening the door) I’m sorry for barking like that … you are a very welcome sight.  Please come in.

JENNY:  Thanks.  How are you?

DAVID (laughs wearily):  Haven’t you heard? I make a daily habit out of killing people, so, well …. this shouldn’t upset me!

JENNY:  This is so absurd.

DAVID:  I’m very happy to hear that you feel that way.  Would you like to sit down?

JENNY:  I’d love to.

JENNY:  Can I ask you something?

DAVID:  Sure.  Uh, can I get you something?

JENNY:  No, I’m fine. Did you have a fight with Scott at The Press Box not long ago?

DAVID:  Yeah, how’d you know about that?

JENNY:  Brad told me.

DAVID:  Well I didn’t even see him there.

JENNY:  Well, he saw you, and said that you were very angry, and violent, and I …. I just felt that I should come over here and tell you that he’s decided to volunteer this information to Ed Hall.

DAVID:  Oh boy.  (He gets up, walks towards the window, running his hand through his hair) :  Guess there’s quite a lesson to be learned here about the perils of losing your temper in public.  I mean, Scott and I have not been getting along, and yes, I’ve probably threatened to kill him any number of times, but my God, I’d never do it!  But, he was killed with my gun, so I think I’m going to have a bit of a difficult time proving it.

JENNY:  It was your gun?

DAVID:  Yeah, it disappeared from here a couple days ago.

JENNY:  Why’d you have a gun?

DAVID (tilts his head sideways, considering the reason for her question):  Beginning to have some doubts, Jenny?

JENNY (without hesitation):  No.   I’m just thinking about the situation that you’re in, and that Brad is contributing to it. I tried to stop him but … he’s jealous of you.

DAVID (his face noticeably brightens at this thought):  Really?

JENNY: He would like to think that you are the reason we broke up, instead of taking responsibility for it himself.

DAVID:  Wow.  I imagine then that he’ll be delighted at the prospects of my going to jail.  But that’s okay, because I’m delighted that he was jealous!

JENNY (laughs):  Why?

DAVID (He sits down again, then says more seriously):  Because maybe it means you gave him some reason.

JENNY:  He didn’t need a reason. Our friendship was enough.

DAVID:  Jenny, when this is all over, I would like very much if you and I could go out on a date!  You know, I mean a real date … just you and I, just go out somewhere and have some fun. Please say “yes”.  I need desperately to have something to look forward to right about now.

JENNY (smiling): Yes!

DAVID:  Yes!  Thank you.

They get caught up in simply looking at each other for a few moments, then …

DAVID:  You look very tired.   Why don’t you go home and get some rest.  I really appreciate you coming by, but I need to do some thinking here.

JENNY (almost a whisper):  Okay.

As she gets up …

JENNY:   Umm,  if you need anything, anytime, just let me know, okay?

DAVID (quiet, grateful):  I will. You can count on it.

As she starts to put on her wrap, DAVID:  Here, let me help you with that.

JENNY:  Thanks.

DAVID:  I’ll walk you out to your car …

He puts an arm around her, and they walk out together …
