Roger and Hart Talk About The Bauers
August 16, 1991
SCENE: ROGER walks into the stables on the Spaulding estate. Hart isn't there; Roger picks up a book.

ROGER: Yeats ... [reading aloud] "How many loved your moments of glad grace, and
loved
your beauty with love false and true, but one man loved the pilgrim soul in you".
[Roger smiles; he notes the bookmark is a note from "Julie"]

[Later, ROGER is sitting and still reading when
HART comes in; ROGER closes the book and surprises HART]
ROGER: Hello!

HART: Oh, hey! Hey, how ya doin'?
Boy, it's been a while since you've been here.
ROGER: Well, with Alex out of town I thought it'd be a good opportunity to
come and visit. You sure have been taking great care of the place.
HART: Well, it's a great place. I think even these horses feel responsible.
ROGER: They're looking good too.
HART: Yeah, they're getting plenty of exercise.
ROGER: Hey, how are the riding lessons coming? I hear Michelle
Bauer has become a permanent fixture around here.
HART: Yeah, she's a real cutie. Boy, she does love those horses.
ROGER: Can she ride?
HART: Yeah, yeah, she can ride. She's young, but she's got a way with them. You know, I think if you love'em, they kinda cut you a lot of slack.
ROGER: Well, I bet her parents are happy she's got a healthy pastime. Do they ride?
HART: I'm not sure.

[ROGER notices how distracted HART appears to be, and is sure he knows the reason].
ROGER: Hart, you okay?
HART: Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. I'm just ... I'm behind on a lot of work, that's all.
ROGER: Well, that happens when you've got something on your mind.
HART: Yeah, I guess.
ROGER: So, who's Julie?
[ROGER grins, and HART looks like he's been found out].

ROGER: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to butt in.
HART: That's OK.
ROGER: Well, I picked up your book of Yeats and her note was being used as a bookmark.
HART: It's no big deal.
ROGER: Is this the one you told me about at Company?
HART: Yeah.[ he smiles, laughs]
ROGER: Does she have a last name?
HART: Yeah, just...I don't know it!
ROGER [laughs]: Well, I'm sure you can find out. Somebody around here must know her.
HART: Well, I don't know too many of the neighbors except the Bauers.
ROGER: Oh, the neighbors haven't exactly sent out the welcome wagon for you, huh?
HART: This isn't exactly the place where people are gonna come and welcome the stable boy. Except Mrs. Bauer; she's been terrific.
ROGER: So you said. Have you seen a lot of them?
HART: No. Not really. I mean, it's kinda weird for me with Dr. Bauer. I mean .... [HART hesitates; sighs] ... but she's real nice. I mean,
every time she brings me over, she makes me feel real comfortable.
That says a lot considering the way her husband feels.

ROGER: She strikes me as a woman of principle. She's gonna stick to them no matter what.
HART: Yeah. Once she decides something's right, that's what she does.
ROGER: I'm glad there's somebody around here like that.
HART: Yeah, sure makes things easier ... I can just... I can relax when I'm around her.
I don't have to worry about her saying ... anything.
ROGER [quietly, understanding]: About me. It's okay Hart. I know you get a lot of flack about me.
I'm just glad there's one place you can go where you don't get it. I think I owe Maureen Bauer a "thank you".

Roger Thanks Maureen
