Part II: A Skunk ... and A Kiss
Friday, October 6, 1989
CRASH SCENE: ROGER regains consciousness, and is frantic when he sees HOLLY slumped against the steering wheel.
ROGER (scared, handling her gently, desperate to help her): Holly?
Holly? Holly? ...Holly, Holly, Holly .... please, please, please, you gotta be alright.
You gotta be alright. Holly? Holly? Holly?
He gets her out of the car, and carefully lays her on the ground. He begins giving
her mouth-to-mouth resusitation. She finally comes to, and slugs him. He falls
back, yelling.
ROGER: Thank God you're
alive!
HOLLY: What were you doing to me?
ROGER: I was trying to revive you! You weren't breathing!
HOLLY: I'm okay.
ROGER: The hell you are. You look lousy.
HOLLY: Thank you. (She winces in pain).
ROGER: OK, here. Lie down. Lie down. Gonna have to take a look at ya.
HOLLY: I'd have to be dead for that. .... (crying): Oh,
God! Why do we keep getting ourselves in these life or
death situations?
ROGER: I guess we're trying to use up a few of the 18 lives we have between
us.
HOLLY: There's only one life between us that's worth anything.
ROGER: I know. Can you imagine ... how Blake would be if we'd managed
to kill ourselves in this stupid accident?
HOLLY cries out in pain again.
ROGER (trying to examine her ribs) : OK, I'm really gonna have to take a
look at ya. Now you just relax, I'm not gonna put any moves on you, all right?
Please, just take it easy. Holly?!!! Relax! OK? OK, does that hurt? Huh?
Holly? Holly, just relax.
HOLLY's attention is diverted elsewhere for the moment.
ROGER: Just relax!
HOLLY: Look!
ROGER (he sees what she sees, a skunk, and jumps up): Don't move!
HOLLY (laughing): What a perfect metaphor. A skunk!
ROGER: Sssssh....Ssssh.... don't move! ... Don't move!
HOLLY: Maybe we oughta call out the National Guard.
As the skunk scampers away ...
ROGER (exhales, relieved, and falls down beside her): Whew! That
was close.
HOLLY: I can't believe it. You spent all this time with the CIA and you're
afraid of skunks?
ROGER (correcting her misperception): No, excuse me ... I'm not
afraid. I'm allergic. OK?
HOLLY (skeptical): To a skunk?
ROGER: Yeah.
HOLLY: What is it? Family resemblance? Little too close for comfort,
huh?
ROGER bursts out laughing, and she joins in.
ROGER (smiling, remembering): You're still a wiseguy. I can't believe this.
HOLLY: (still laughing) What?
ROGER: That we can actually laugh together. I mean, who would've thought
....? I mean, I can't believe it.
HOLLY: Well, beats slugging you for the minute ...
ROGER: It's a lot less painful.
HOLLY: I'm not so sure about that.
ROGER: All right. Lie down. (He helps her back, and then carefully touches her
ribs) Just take it easy. OK, now, does that hurt?
HOLLY: No.
ROGER (tending to her very gently): This? Here? I don't
think you broke any ribs.
HOLLY: That's good.
ROGER : Here. Here. (He takes a handkerchief and dabs at her cut lip).
HOLLY: Since when can you stand the sight of blood?
ROGER: Oh, you're referring to the blood test for our marriage license, right?
HOLLY: Yeah, when you passed out.
ROGER: No, no, I did not pass out. I was sick from
the curry that you made the night before.
HOLLY: You loved that curry. (ROGER picks a leaf out of
her hair) You couldn't stand the needle, then we had to come back the next day. (As HOLLY
tries to sit up, ROGER takes off his jacket).
ROGER: Here. Guess they weren't all bad times, right? (As he wraps
his jacket around her, he puts his arm around her, then musses her hair, and they look at
each other for a moment): Oh, Holly.

HOLLY (quietly): What? What is it?
Impulsively, ROGER kisses
her.
End of episode.

"The Kiss" is the Friday cliffhanger ( those were the days ...!) So, continuing to the Monday, October 9, 1989, episode, ROGER kisses HOLLY ...
...and, for a brief moment, she doesn't object. But
then she slaps him.
ROGER: (rubbing his mouth, picking himself up, laughing): Well,
either I've lost my touch, or you've lost your capacity to enjoy a simple kiss.
HOLLY (she throws his jacket at him and attempts to get up): You
egotistical pig! I would rather crawl home than spend another second in your
company. Ouch!
ROGER: You hate me that much, huh?
HOLLY: Yes, Roger, I hate you that much. (...yelling at an oncoming
car): Hey, hey, come over here!
A man approaches. It's Neil Everest, once-and-future psycho, but for the time being he
appears fairly normal and harmless. He's in town with the mute, long presumed-dead
Beth Raines (Now this won't make Blake happy, but her husband Phillip will be
ecstatic ... but that's another story...)
NEIL: Are you people okay?
ROGER: Yeah, yeah, no, we're all right. As you can see, we had a
little accident.
HOLLY: This man attacked me!
ROGER (incredulous): WHAT???!!!!
HOLLY: He attacked me! This man attacked
me!
NEIL: Just now?
HOLLY: Don't touch me! ... Not now!
NEIL: I'm sorry. I don't quite understand.
ROGER: She's very shaken from the accident. She's disoriented. She's even
a little violent at times.
HOLLY: He kissed me!
NEIL: Wait. I thought you said he attacked you?
HOLLY: He did!
ROGER: See what I mean?
HOLLY: Oh shut up!
ROGER: I think we have to get her to a hospital right away. I would
appreciate it very much if you could go call for help.
NEIL: All right. There's a pay phone I saw about a mile down the road
between here and where I'm staying. I guess I could use that.
ROGER: That'd be terrific. Thank you.
HOLLY: Great. Great.
NEIL (to Holly): Listen, you wanna come with me?
HOLLY: I'll be okay til the police come.
NEIL: You sure?
HOLLY: Yeah. It's him I'm not so sure about.
NEIL: OK.
HOLLY: Roger, just what are you trying to pull?
ROGER: I meant it Holly.
HOLLY: What? That I'm violent and disoriented?
ROGER: That I care about you. I guess I always have.
HOLLY: Oh, God. Who writes your dialogue?
ROGER: I know you can't believe this ...
HOLLY: You got that right.

ROGER: I can hardly believe it myself,
but it's true. As God as my witness, it's true.
HOLLY: Oh, c'mon. Get away from me. I don't wanna be near you when you get
struck by lightning.
ROGER: Could you tell me what it is between us that makes us blow up like this
whenever we're together?
HOLLY: Hate! I hate you!
ROGER: Are you so sure?
HOLLY: You make my skin crawl. You ... my stomach turn. I get chest
pains. What ... what is it if it's not hate then?!!!
ROGER: That's what I'm asking you.

HOLLY (as she hears sirens and the police
approach them): Thank God.
POLICE OFFICER: We got an anonymous report of an accident. Are you alright?
