December 5, 1983

DAVID calls his apartment and tells SIMON to leave town for his own safety.  As DAVID is leaving the hotel, he hears JENNY's voice, and catches a bit of the discussion going on in the lobby:

BRAD:   Well, this is a disaster.  Who’s going to want to stay in a hotel where somebody was murdered?  Why did Renaldi have to pick my opening night to knock off Scott Edgar?

JENNY (angry):  Brad, it is a rumor!

BRAD:  What do you mean, a rumor?  I told you I saw Renaldi practically punch him out the other night.

MARCO:  Really?

BRAD:  Yeah, a few days ago at The Press Box.  He was very angry.  Very violent.

JENNY:  That is not the same thing as actually killing someone!

BRAD:  When you gonna stop defending this creep?  He’s no good!

JENNY:  Oh, and you’d be very happy if it hadn’t happened in your hotel, right?

MARCO:  Well, actually, it’s going to bring a lot of bad press.  It’s going to be the talk of the town for a while.

COURTNEY:  Oh, when the publicity dies down, it’ll be okay.

As ED HALL enters the lobby, we hear :

ED:  It’s not much, but it’s all we have to go on.  Brad …I need the name of the firm you hired for the security guards.  Also, we need the guest list, and the names and addresses of all the staff that works here … okay?

BRAD:  Okay, no problem, but why go to all this trouble when you know that Renaldi did it?

JENNY:  Brad!

ED:  A man is innocent until proven guilty, remember Brad?

BRAD:  Well, I have a story to tell you, Ed, that’ll give you all the proof you need.

ED:  You on the level, Brad?

BRAD:  Sure am.

JENNY:  I cannot believe you’re doing this!

BRAD:  Jenny, it’s my duty as a citizen to report what I know.

ED:  Listen, I don’t know what you two are in to, but if you have any information relevant to this case …

BRAD:  Believe me, I do.

ED:  All right.  Why don’t we go in to your office and talk about it?

BRAD:  Okay.  And I’ll get the guest list and the other information that you need.

ED:  Okay, good.

MARCO:  Think maybe I could buy you girls a drink?

COURTNEY:  Nothing for me, thanks.

JENNY:  I’d love some wine.

MARCO:  Okay.

COURTNEY:  This certainly hasn’t been Brad’s week, has it?  Losing you, now this.

JENNY:  Well, at least this one he couldn’t cause.

MARCO:  Speaking of Brad, what’s been going on with you two?

JENNY:  I’d rather not go into it.  It’s over.

COURTNEY:  Excuse me,  I think I’d better start answering some phone calls from the press.

MARCO:  I’ll see you later.

JENNY:  Bye.

MARCO: Well, is it really over for good this time between you two?

JENNY: No question.

MARCO:  No. I’m sorry.  I mean, I know how difficult it must be for you.

JENNY:  Thanks.  It hasn’t been easy.

MARCO: Well, it’s probably best in the long run.  (He laughs):  I don’t know why I said that; it’s just that that’s what everybody says in situations like this, so I thought I’d thrown that in.

JENNY laughs.

MARCO:  Are you and David Renaldi seeing each other or something?  You going out with him?

JENNY:  No.  We’re friends.  I like him a lot.

MARCO:  Ah, and that’s why Brad told Ed right away about the fight.  I got it. I got the picture.

JENNY:  Yeah.  (she pauses, and then...) You know, you have good instincts about people.

MARCO:  Oh yeah, I’ve got instincts! Hey!

JENNY:  Can you conceive of David actually killing someone?

MARCO:  I can conceive of anyone killing someone under the proper circumstances.  But in this particular case, I doubt it.  I mean, it’d be very odd for him to prepare like that.  To come here to this big party, to have everything set up, to have brought a gun …

JENNY (quickly considering his words):  Thanks for the drink.  You know what?  I’m going to go see David.  He could probably use a friend right about now.

MARCO:  Ah, Jenny …

JENNY:  Yeah … ?

MARCO:  I won’t tell Brad that you’re going over to see David.

JENNY (pinching his cheek) :  You’re such a friend.

MARCO:  Aren’t I though? (They laugh)  I’ll walk out with you.

JENNY:  Thanks.

As they leave the room …

MARCO:  You know, corpses just ruin every party …
